Budget + Scope

Biochain Updates August 2020

  • Before the COVID pause, XiaoShan and I had been working on tracking problems between Google Analytics and Woocommerce <= (the plugin for WP that adds product SKUs, Orders, and Checkout Flow).
  • There are inconsistencies in the code for the product + category pages, so the conversion reports are inaccurate.
  • Searching for specific products by SKU or Title was also yielding inconsistent results.
  • We were also beginning to implement the OpenSeaDragon zooming image javascript plugin for products on biochain.com.

I believe the most efficient approach here is to refactor biochain.com into a fresh WP install.

This sounds intimidating but is straightforward since I built the site originally. It’s also an important foundation for ongoing work. I’ll be able to deliver requests much faster if I’m able to leverage modern WP features like the Gutenberg editor, the newer Relevanssi Plugin (to fix the search results) and JS/CSS asset optimization (to reduce load times for both the users and myself as a developer).

This will also address the recommendations from Supreme Optimization all at once, rather than manually tracing the issue template by template.

To be clear: the design and structure of the site would remain the same. I might suggest minor layout changes (mostly removing things or moving them up) but we’d still be using all the same fonts / layouts / colors / logo etc. and the editing process won’t change for anyone. I’m happy to elaborate here if stakeholders have specific questions about their process with WP.

Also, I would import the new WP install into the existing WP Engine server pod, so no changes would be needed re: domain, hosting, DNS, etc. The site will still live exactly where it does now.

Once this refactor is complete, I can begin implementing OpenSeaDragon. The tool itself is a Javascript plugin that we will embed in the products templates on biochain.com, but I’ll need some additional hours for QA to work w/ Victoria and ensure all the images are looking good and are in the right place.

I can complete this work for $4,000 (50 hrs x $80 / hr)

Deliverables

  • Confirm w/ Supreme Optimization that their suggestions have been implemented and all is working/green-light on their end w/ no further bugs found
  • Confirm w/ Victoria that search results for SKUs and Titles are working properly
  • Complete 1:1 transfer of all templates, assets, and User/Order/Product data to a fresh WP install (on the same WP Engine Server Pod)
  • Confirm w/ Victoria that OpenSeaDragon zooming / hi-res images are working properly on all product pages.

Once we reach this milestone, we can reassess priorities and plan any possible further work.
